Ubuntu Linux is a distribution of the free and open-source Linux operating system. Ubuntu runs the GNOME desktop environment and has branched off into special editions, such as Kubuntu, which offers the KDE desktop, and Ubuntu Server Edition, which takes fewer resources to operate. When you connect Ubuntu to a wired network, it uses DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol) to attempt connection to the router or network device it is attached to. You need to enter the IP and network configuration manually if your network requires a static IP address.
Difficulty: EasyInstructions1Right-click the "Network Manager" icon in the notification area of your panel. Click "Edit Connections."
2Click "Wired" and then select the wired device you would like to perform the static connection.
3Click "Edit."
4Click "IPv4 Settings" and then select "Manual" from the "Method" pull-down menu.
5Click "Add" and enter your IP address, DNS server address, hostmask and other connection details. Your ISP provides this data as it is required to connect.
6Cick "Apply." The network manager will now reconnect the device using the newly applied settings.
